The Moment That Changes Everything...
I was in a session with a couple recently, and something small happened that I keep thinking about.
They were mid-argument, or about to be. You know the moment. Someone says something, the air changes, and you can feel the next line coming before it's even said.
Except this time, one of them just... stopped. For a second. Maybe two.
(You'd have missed it if you weren't watching for it!) No big sigh, no dramatic pause, nothing performative. Just a breath. And then they replied, calmer than you'd expect, calmer than the moment called for, honestly.
And the whole thing just didn't happen. No blow-up. No spiral. The conversation stayed... a conversation.
I think we get mindfulness wrong a lot of the time. We treat it like it's something you do on a cushion, eyes closed, somewhere quiet. But most of the time it's not that at all. It's that gap. The one between getting hit with something and opening your mouth.
Don't interrupt. Don't fire back the first thing that comes up. Let there be a beat before the beat becomes a sentence.
That's it. That's the whole 'trick' (if you can call it that!)
And it's hard. I won't pretend it's not. Reacting is easy, it's automatic, it's what your body wants to do. Pausing takes something extra, especially when you're already annoyed or hurt or tired of the same argument.
Some people need a bit of help getting there. I've had clients use tapping (EFT) just to bring the nervous system down enough that the pause is even possible. It's not magic, it's just a way in.
But even without a technique, even just knowing the pause exists, that it's a real option in that moment can shift things. Not the whole conversation. Just that one second in the middle of it. That's usually enough...
