Prioritising Self Care in a Busy World

Updated: Nov 1, 2024

In a world filled with activity, noise, and hurry, it can be incredibly challenging to feel truly healthy and rested. To nurture the health of our mind, body, and soul (your360!), finding intentional ways to re-centre and restore ourselves. Here’s how you can make time for self care and create small, meaningful habits that add up to a big impact.

We each have 24 hours in a day right?

These hours are yours to spend however you see fit, so how much are you dedicating some of this precious time to yourself? Self-care doesn’t have to mean huge lifestyle changes; sometimes, it’s about finding small moments to focus on you before you give out your energy to everyone else...

Mind: Nurturing Mental Self-Care

Mental self-care is all about keeping your mind sharp and at its best. It involves activities that stimulate your mind, help you process your day, and allow you to decompress. Ask yourself: Are you making time for activities that challenge your brain?

One of my favourite ways to nurture my mind is through reading. I’d got so busy at one point that I stopped reading books altogether, despite my love for learning. Now, I’m making a conscious effort to read or at listen to an audiobook, every day—it’s a simple pleasure that keeps my mind engaged and takes me into a different space and perspective.

Another non-negotiable mental health practice for me is meditation...

I know meditation can seem intimidating; it’s easy to picture monks on mountaintops, chanting in isolation. But...meditation doesn’t have to be complex or time-consuming!

Even micro-meditations—short, focused exercises of 2-5 minutes—can be transformative.

Research from Yale University shows that mindfulness meditation decreases activity in the brain’s "monkey mind" network, the part that makes you overthink and find hard to switch off.

Harvard also found that meditation can change the brain’s structure, increasing the thickness of areas linked to memory, learning, and emotional regulation. Just a few minutes each day can improve focus, boost self-esteem, and reduce stress.

Body: Physical Self-Care for Lasting Wellness

Physical self care includes how you fuel your body, your sleep quality, and your physical activity levels. There’s a powerful connection between body and mind. When you care for your body, you’ll feel better both physically and mentally.

Daily movement is key. Exercise releases endorphins, which help elevate mood. But it’s not only endorphins; regular exercise also boosts serotonin levels, which regulates mood, appetite, and sleep. It helps balance stress hormones like adrenaline, reducing the chances of being stuck in "fight or flight" mode.

You don’t have to commit to intense workouts. One of our favourite ways to get moving at mb360 is to dance! It’s fun, easy to fit into any day, and perfect to do with kids or on your own. Put on a song you love and just dance—no judgement, just pure joy!

Soul: Cultivating Connection and Joy

Soul-care includes anything that brings a sense of meaning, connection, or peace. One beautiful way to nourish your soul is by creating small, joyful rituals throughout your day. It could be sitting with a coffee and watching the sunrise, lighting a candle in the evening, or simply unplugging from your phone for a few minutes.

In my home, I’ve created little "happy places" in different rooms. While I don’t have a dedicated self-care room, I have mini spaces that make me smile—a cosy chair, candles, my favourite artwork, or a flower lamp. These small spaces remind me to pause and appreciate the moment.

You don’t need a lot of space or fancy items. You can create a similar corner at your desk or even in a drawer. It’s all about tuning into what makes you feel at ease.

Start Small, Make it Count

Self-care doesn’t require an overhaul of your life. Starting with tiny habits can make all the difference.

Take care of yourself in a 360° way... your mind, body, and soul will thank you.
