3 Ways to Shift Self Sabotage

Our brains are wired for survival. At their core, they aim to protect us from harm, whether physical, emotional, or psychological. This protective nature manifests as defense mechanisms— it’s like our brain and body goes “protection mode ON” and whoosh this invisible forcefield goes up!


 

While these attitudes are well-intentioned (designed to shield us from pain, uncertainty or discomfort) and may serve a useful purpose in the short term, they often become restrictive over time, trapping us in cycles that can hinder our growth, wellbeing and happiness.

 

 

Our protective mode usually stem from past experiences. For example, if you were ridiculed for sharing an idea as a child, your brain might decide that staying silent is the safest course of action. Initially, these mechanisms protect us from potential harm, but over time, they can become barriers to progress in life and inhibt our happiness.

 

We can self sabotage…by accident!


What makes this protection mode pattern particularly tricky to overcome is our brain and body’s preference for familiarity. The unknown feels risky, even when the current situation is unsatisfying or less than ideal. Whether it’s remaining in a job we dislike, clinging to unhealthy habits, relationships that no longer serve us or staying silent when we yearn to speak up, our minds convince us that sticking with what we know is safer than venturing into uncharted territory. But this "safety" comes at a cost…

So how do we shift out of this protection mode?

 

To bring awareness to and shift out of our protection mode, we need a 360-degree approach that incorporates the mind, body, and soul. These three interconnected aspects of our being form the foundation for meaningful  and sustainable growth and change:


Mind: The brain’s natural tendency to avoid risk can be challenged by actively questioning our fears—Is this ‘danger’ real, or is it my mind trying to protect me?—we create space for new possibilities.

 

Body: Protection mode often shows up physically, manifesting as tension, fatigue, or restlessness. Engaging the body through somatic practices and movement, such as yoga, walking, or breathwork, it will help release stored emotions and promotes a sense of safety in the unknown.

 

Soul: At the core of our being, the soul craves connection, purpose, and authenticity. Our protection mode can often suppress these deeper needs. Tuning into what lights you up—whether through creative expression, meditation, or spending time in nature—can help you reconnect with your true self and align with your deeper values.

 

Embracing Change


True transformation happens when we step beyond the limits of our protection mode and embrace the unknown. A 360-degree approach—encompassing the mind, body, and soul—ensures we’re equipped to navigate this journey with resilience and purpose.

 

It’s time to thank these protective instincts for their service, recognise their limitations, and gently let the accidental self sabotage voices go. By doing so, we free ourselves to explore new possibilities, express our true selves, and create a life that feels vibrant and fulfilling.
